Internet Marketing Facts From 166 Respondents

internet marketing facts

Internet marketing facts – Recently I conducted a survey asking some questions related to internet marketing / make money online. The survey managed to get 166 respondents, and as promised everyone who participated will be automatically entered into the lucky draw where one random lucky winner will get my upcoming software/tool (to be retailed @ at least $97) for free.

Announcing the lucky winner… Gary Stoodley! You will be emailed with instructions on how to access the tool once it’s released to the public.

With that out of the way, now I’d like to share the results with you as I believe there is something to take home and learn from this.

Here are some screenshots:

Here are the results in a nutshell:

1. Almost half of the respondents have more than 1 year experience making money online, yet most have not earned any money yet (read: zero dollars), or at most $500/month

2. Apart from information overload, the other 3 biggest problems that are preventing/hindering people from making money online are, in order of magnitude:

(a) Not enough technical skills

(b) Not enough traffic

(c) Not enough money

3. More people are into niche marketing (where you enter multiple niche markets) rather than into 1 or 2 markets where you go deep and establish yourself as an authority in the marketplace.

4. In terms of tools/software that save time and efforts by automating tasks, here are their ranks from most important to least important: traffic tools, content tools, research tools, design tools, and mass building tools

Let’s talk about each of these points in greater detail:

1. Almost half of the respondents have more than 1 year experience making money online, yet most have not earned any money yet (read: zero dollars), or at most $500/month

Welly’s Take:

This further proves that most people have yet to earn any kind of money online. The question is WHY? Answers, or at least partial answers, can be found in point number 2 below.

Sidenote: so the next time you come across a sales piece that promises you instant riches by next week by working only 2 hours per day – run as fast as you can! The fact is that you can’t earn money that fast. PERIOD!

2. Apart from information overload, the other 3 biggest problems that are preventing/hindering people from making money online are, in order of magnitude:

(a) Not enough technical skills

(b) Not enough traffic

(c) Not enough money

Welly’s Take:

Information overload – This is something that I’ve always said to be the number 1 reason why people fail to make money online. Overcome internet marketing information overload ASAP and make this your number 1 priority, starting today.

Not enough technical skills – You don’t actually need to learn and master all the technical skills. If you do, then stop calling yourself an internet marketer and start calling yourself a programmer. Like I’ve mentioned before in this continuity programs post, you only need to learn BASIC technical skills such as using an FTP program, installing your WordPress blog, create a basic html page, connecting your domain and hosting together.

These skills, like any other skills, can be learned. The question is: are you willing to?

Not enough trafficTraffic by itself is USELESS if you can’t convert them into money, or if you can’t convert them into whatever you’re trying to achieve. In other words, you need conversion to make your traffic worthwhile.

Take a look at some of the previous posts that I’ve covered on traffic generation and conversion. If you’re in a hurry and don’t have time to read through all of them, here’s some main strategies in a nutshell:

To get massive traffic, the BEST way is to get JV partners and affiliates to promote your product. If you don’t have a product yet, you can do some SEO to rank your sites highly in the search engines.

To get conversion, the BEST way is to target the RIGHT audience who are already searching for what you are selling (so you don’t need to educate them that they need your solution/product). Then build trusting relationships with them, and the first way to start doing that is to actually tell your audience who you are as an individual, and start giving instead of receiving all the time.

Not enough money – This is a classic. Not enough money to make money online means you don’t have the money to pay for business expenses like domain, hosting, email autoresponder services, legitimate and honest how-to courses, etc.

This means you are desperate for money. As I’ve explained in my previous post, if you’re desperate for money then chances are you’re going to fall for the get-rich-quick scheme and fail altogether.

To solve this “not enough money” problem, you first need to have enough money to cover for business expenses like the ones I mentioned above. You can do that by maintain your full-time offline job while working on your online business part-time and/or you can take on freelance projects where you provide writing, designing, or programming services for other marketers and business owners.

3. More people are into niche marketing (where you enter multiple niche markets) rather than into 1 or 2 markets where you go deep and establish yourself as an authority in the marketplace.

Welly’s Take:

I personally have tried the niche marketing model but it never worked out for me. Yes I failed a few times following this model, and yes I know there are a lot of marketers out there who have been very successful at niche marketing.

Just not me – it’s not my cup of tea.

I have limited time and resources available, and I know I MUST have LEVERAGE if I want to make it big. Being involved in multiple different markets does not provide the leverage that I seek and need.

What I mean by leverage is this – if you’re only involved in 1 main market where you go deep and establish yourself as an expert in your marketplace (my GOLD Coaching teaches you this step-by-step by the way), you’ll have the time, energy, and resources to dedicate yourself to this niche.

This means you’re able to create and maintain trusting and beneficial relationships with your audience. This will allow you sell multiple products (that increase in price and value) to the same group of people without incurring additional marketing costs, since subsequent product offers that you make to them can be said to have almost zero costs (other than autoresponder fees).

(…remember that your customer acquisition cost is the highest at your first point of contact with them)

If you’re in multiple markets, it’s very hard for you to establish yourself as an expert in the various markets. Obviously you can’t be an expert at dog training, internet marketing, weight loss, dating, hypnosis, personal development, etc. together at the same time right?

Yes you can secure PLR rights to products, but even so it’s still hard to establish yourself as an expert. Would you consider someone who sells an ebook that contains (roughly) the same content and exact wording of another ebook (that is sold by a different person) an expert?

Being a niche marketer also means you typically only sell one or two low-cost front end products that are less than $50 or $100.

No deep relationship with your audience means it’s very, very difficult to sell them high-end products.

In addition, you need to always generate leads for the various niches that you’re involved in – in other words, you can’t recycle your traffic like you can if you’re an authority marketer. In other words, with the authority model, your audience (number of subscribers and customers) grow as times passes and you accumulate your hard work and efforts. This doesn’t apply to the niche marketing model.

4. In terms of tools/software that save time and efforts by automating tasks, the most popular, ranked in terms of popularity, are: traffic tools, content tools, research tools, design tools, and mass building tools

This is interesting. I’m going to use this data wisely to plan for future software/tools releases. In fact, my upcoming tool (even though it’s been long overdue) is going to be released soon, so stay tuned for that.

You’ve heard time and time again that most people are not earning a single penny online, and that the main cause for this is information overload. These are no longer deductions, but are internet marketing facts, as can be seen from the results of the survey above.

You’ve hit the nail on the head Welly!
Most people will give up thinking the problem is “them” or “them others” without knowing the facts you’ve outlined above

  • Sheridan Berry on March 2, 2012

You are right when you’ve said that what’s the use of traffic when you can’t convert into money. The end result of this is to earn and you have to always bear that in mind.

  • Nathan on November 7, 2011

My breakthrough came when I literally started deleted “courses” that I had bought from various “gurus”. I found 2 people who I felt were the real deal and modeled my business after them. their courses are expensive, but in reality, they are cheap compared to the ROI.

Welly great article and i totally agree with you that not enough people are making money on line. I have been doing online applications for over 5 years and i make a good income not enough to stop my full time job however i do run my own business.
Im going to challenge you now Welly and this should really show what your made of.

Why should someone listen to you about this please demonstrate what exactly your going to do different from other marketers out there – whats the missing ingredient to success from your ingredients that your offering??

    Tom

    • Welly on September 6, 2011

      Hi Tom

There actually are no “secrets” to success, so to speak. The “secrets” to success that everyone is telling you — you most likely know about it already.

Perseverance, dedication, passion, giving value to others — and by giving value I mean you make other people’s lives better (save their time, money, make them FEEL better, etc).

The ability to keep going forward and pushing yourself even when times are low is important. Rome wasn’t built in a day. What matters most is small, daily, incremental improvements.

      Best,
      Welly

After looking at the stats you compiled, I realize that so many people are really struggling to make money online. I have found that by focusing on doing the work of marketing a product and ignoring all the hype products that you can start building a solid icnome to build on.

    Hi there.
I’m new to this internet marketing stuff. I just started this month, and luckily I’m doing just find gathering small bucks from my efforts. I do agree that the biggest trouble for me is an information overload. I spend almost like 30 hours straight swallowing all the information, until someone senior at internet marketing world told me to take a rest and then implement what I’ve been learning and keep on learning on my way to success.

    Regards,
    William.

Thanks for sharing your survey results and adding relevant commentary to help clarify the material. I didn’t participate in the survey but am not surprised at the results. My biggest issue, beyond spending too much money on resources that guarantee a ton of profits, is the overload issue. I’ve been doing this about 9 months now and have gained in knowledge but, more importantly, have gotten beyond the hype and found a few great resources to take advantage of.

Thanks again for the great post and I will pass it along to others. It is well worth viewing for anyone who wants to make money with internet marketing. Best regards!

There are several reasons as explained above for the failure of making money online. Few basic reasons why people fail to make money online are : Looking for Instant Success and Lack of Faith in what they are doing. When you want to be successful in internet marketing or say want to make good money online, first of all you should have proper mind set in these areas to reach your benefits.

  • Jim on December 1, 2010

Thanks for your insights. As some stated above, you’re one of the few internet marketers that really tell the truth…especially the results of the survey. I’m reading another of your ebooks and am convinced that going deep instead of wide is the best way to start. I’ve been “dabbling” in IM for a few years and have not made much money. I’m lacking in time and focus. I’m working on these and am planning for a better 2011.

    • Welly on December 1, 2010

Yup, if you’re lacking in time and focus, definitely go deep instead of wide.

      Wish you nothing but success!

  • Jan on November 30, 2010

    Hi Welly,
Thanks for sharing the interesting results. As one of the few people making money on internet i think that the most important thing is to make a plan. And take 2 emailadresses. One to use for yourself and one for the “launches”, the “gifts” and the “one-time offers”. They’re very confusing when you’re starting. Every day you get 50 mails promoting a “New, Unique, never seen” product you cannot afford to miss all with unique bonusses worth zillions of money. Get lost of that rubbish! (Sorry listbuilders!)

    • Welly on December 1, 2010

      Jan

Thanks for adding. Yes a plan is definitely important to keep you in the right direction.

Nice tactic on using 2 emails too :)

  • WD Mino on November 30, 2010

    Hi Welly,

I would not consider you a guru as one person stated. at least not in the derogatory use of the word:) I consider you a man who knows what he is doing and someone who contributes value to the lives of many in the forum and in your emails and these blog posts.
I am privileged to have the opportunity to see at work in these areas. so Thanks for being you.

In regards to the survey I took it. I make money but nothing spectacular-Yet.

I got one thing out of this blog post that caused me to delete some of my sites. I need to focus on ONE thing and master it. I know a lot about membership sites A Lot. I am focusing on that now and trying to put new spins on the delivery etc.
Thanks Welly for being a sound advisor in this area.
Not really a lot of folks I listen to I can count them on one hand I listened to what you said and immediately began implementing. I look forward to learning more
    cheers
    -WD

    • Welly on December 1, 2010

      Hi WD

Awesome! Glad that you got ONE thing out of this and actually DO something.

      Compliments to you!

  • Din on November 30, 2010

I still feel getting big traffic is a big hurdle to newbie in Internet Marketing. Many successful IM are bragging about how they build a list hence traffic.

  • Jacky Chan on November 30, 2010

    Welly,

I have unsubscribed many internet marketer incoming newsletter from my mailbox, except yours. Because your incoming mail are always inspiring and informative. Thank you.

I totally agree that many newbie are not making money due to many reason. Also many of them given up this biz due to the expectation has not been met as described in the sales letter when they signing up.

Personally i signed up 2 IM program in a IM convention that cause me USD 2,300 a year ago, by which one of them is total sucks! (sorry for being rude) The another is very good but still not good enough due to information overload.

This months is my anniversary for my IM biz, for the past 12 months, i was very committed to this biz by which averagely i spend 5 hours a days in following what has been taught by the so called internet guru. 100% follow & focus (in part time basis). But i only made $10 so far. I am very sure not many people can have the level of commitment as i did.

Now i have signed up another one online cost me $495, and this one is a trusted guru (after survey in many forum, 99.99% give positive credit to him) and now in the effort of putting my site to get higher ranking. This is my last try on IM.

After 1 full year of 100% commitment in IM, what i can say is many internet guru are fake! And always talk big on their own product. There are very rare genuine guru online now.

For those kind of sales letter that mention that make 5-6 figure in less than week or months is total fake, it is 0.001% probabilities.

Finally, thanks for your effort in making the survey done.

    • Welly on December 1, 2010

      Hey Jacky

Thanks for sticking with me. Hearing your story, I, as well as a lot of other marketers, went through the same thing in the early stages of our IM career.

It took me 11 months before I made my first ever online money. Then it took me another 10 months before my income stayed consistent.

I sincerely hope you hang on and succeed!

  • Juan on November 30, 2010

Even thought I did not participate on the survey, I have to confessed I’m sharing similar symptoms. Many Gurus such like yourself had been asking the “why” question since I’ve been involved in IM.
You have to admit sharing some responsibility. Right?

It seems to me that most internet marketers or wanna be shared the ” ADD” syndrome and therefore another shining object is more than welcome.

Then we have to deal with what we’re more comfortable dealing with… and so and so.

    I heard some many times.

    Take action, take action.

    Concentrate on one thing.

    Lol

Most of the time, i had learned more NOT by what the Gurus tell me but how they do.

    In that line of thought.

    Let me ask you.

The reason for this survey has anything to do with, ” This is interesting. I’m going to use this data wisely to plan for future software/tools releases. In fact, my upcoming tool (even though it’s been long overdue) is going to be released soon, so stay tuned for that.”?

You have understand that was another shiny object.

Should not be surprise by my next statement.

I’ll keep an eye on it.

Very interesting survey or should i had said, tactic.

    Thanks,

    Juan

    • Welly on November 30, 2010

      Hi Juan

My next or future tools/software might or might not be another new shiny object, depending on WHO is looking at the offer.

If my tool can help generate traffic to John’s site and John is indeed looking for additional ways to generate traffic to his site, then it’s not a shiny object in the eyes of John.

If, on the other hand, Peter is looking to increase his copywriting skills and he buys my traffic tool, then it is a shiny object to Peter.

And yes, the reason for creating the survey in the first place is to know my audience better to find out what problems they have, and hence create more products/tools to solve these problems.

And yes this means more money for me because I’m in this business to make money by providing value for others, not to be a philanthropist :)

      • Juan on November 30, 2010

You and I are not surprise for the survey’s findings.

Actually , I could named at least 20 gurus that had done similar surveys with very similar results.

So, you have to wonder… why keep doing this surveys when the answers are well known?

“And yes this means more money for me because I’m in this business to make money, not to be a philanthropist :)

        I do understand.

I had come into the realization that there’s more to learn by how they said than by what they said.

        Will you agree?

        Thanks for your honest response.

        Juan

        • Welly on December 1, 2010

The reason why I conducted the survey even though “the answers are already known” is because different audience respond differently to different marketers, even though there is a high chance that most of the
survey results are roughly the same.
